Designer Lichen Ding's Award-Winning Creation Blends Natural Elements with Contemporary Design

The MeetNi guesthouse, located in Yingshan, China, is a testament to the harmonious fusion of old and new, natural and man-made. The design draws from the memory points of classical and traditional architectural styles, using contemporary design language to extend the landscape into the interior space. The result is a natural symbiosis that creates a serene and elegant environment.

The guesthouse's unique properties lie in its use of local materials and craftsmanship. Stone and wood are the primary materials used in the environment and furniture design, complemented by local folk hand-made bamboo weaving and linen printing and dyeing. The decorative fabric also meticulously uses natural straw weaving and handmade solid wood round carving works, contributing to the overall natural, quiet, and comfortable ambiance.

One of the main challenges in the design process was the transformation of the original building, which was two connected structures. The middle aisle, after the merger, would have been dark and dull, potentially creating a negative experience for hotel guests. To overcome this, a five-story hollow light well was introduced to bring natural daylight to the aisles on each floor, becoming a highlight of the design.

The design elements are neither complicated nor minimalist. Chinese simple color is used as the base, but textured paint is used to leave space blank, forming an oriental artistic conception in line with modern aesthetics. The combination of modern humanistic home furnishings and traditional decorations with historical stories creates a dialogue between the ancient and the modern, adding a leisurely ancient charm to the space.

MeetNi's design is not just an architectural accomplishment; it is a testament to the successful integration of modern design methods with traditional Chinese traditions and courtyard culture. It respects the natural scenery while harmoniously integrating the living needs of modern people into the local nature and culture.
